Overview
A DDR inspired (Dance Dance Revolution) music video project for Toronto-based psychedelic rock band Mother Tongues.

Process
The project started with a call with the client discussing their vision for the piece. They wanted a DDR themed music video in which a video game version of the band’s bassist and her brother would be dancing to one of their songs titled “Only You”.
I started by taking inspiration from low-poly character designs and sketched out cartoonish orthographic drawings for the 2 main characters.
These characters were then modeled and textured in blender. They were imported into C4D to apply various mixamo dance animations that were synced to the track. The animations were baked and taken back into blender to create an environment for them and to animate camera paths.
The project was rendered in Eevee (Blender’s realtime rendering engine) to preserve the video game look.
The UI elements were coded and animated in after effects. A mosaic effect with some glow was applied over the footage to create a retro arcade feel.
